 a. Course Requirements

·        Core Courses                                                18 credits

All candidates for the Master of Business Administration in Management (MBA) must satisfy the requirements by completing the following six courses (18 semester credits):

The emphasis in Management has been developed for students desiring a broad preparation for management.  Its requirements are the completion of the following six courses (18 credits).

 b. Research Requirements

All students will be required to undertake a “Research Topic in Business”  (for 3 credits)  and a “Thesis in Management”  (for 3 or 6 credits).  However, specific courses for an equivalent amount of credits could replace the thesis requirements after the Graduate Committee’s approval and the Affiliate University Advisor’s consent.  The MGT 698 may fulfill the “Research Topic” required, if need be.

MGT 505     Personnel Management & Human Resources Development 3 credits

 An analysis of human resources theory and principles in current practice.  The emphasis is on application of tested techniques for selection, development and compensation.  Topical coverage includes:

-        Role of human resources development staff function

-        Training and development

-        Recruitment and selection procedures

-        Principles of compensation policies

-        Collective bargaining practices

-        Personnel problem-solving counseling

 

MGT 515                     Business and the Computer  3 credits

The course provides a survey of the state of the art developments in business information technologies and their important role in effective decision-making and modern management.  The course is organized in two parts.  The first presents an overview of information technology; i.e., computer hardware and software & i.e., data-base management systems; The second part focuses on the use of personal computers as decision support tools for solving problems.

 

MGT 600                     Managerial Microeconomics                   3 credits

An overview of Microeconomics from the stand point of managerial decision-making.  The emphasis is on the practical application of basic concepts to market decision problems.

Topical coverage includes:

-        Behavioral and managerial theories of the firm

-        Determination of market systems

-        Demand estimations

-        Cost determination

-        Forecasting

-        Factor inputs determination

-        Applied microeconomics problem-solving case studies

 

MGT 603                     Managerial Macroeconomics                   3 credits

An overview of Macroeconomics from the standpoint of managerial decision-making.  The emphasis is on the money market and the basic concepts of macroeconomic and business instruments in decision problems.  Topical coverage includes:

-        National Income Determination with graphical model interpretation

-        Money market determination with graphical model interpretation

-        Aggregate demand and supply

-        Business vs. public policies and decision-making analyses

-        Applied Macroeconomics problem-solving case studies.

 

MGT 606                     Quantitative Methods in Business     3 credits

An introduction to the application of mathematical techniques in the Business decision-making process.  The emphasis is on practical usage in management situations.

Topical coverage includes:

-        Linear programming

-        Transportation problems

-        Network planning

-        Queuing theory

-        Regression analysis

-        Modeling techniques

 

MGT 609                     Financial Management                     3 credits

A review of the concepts underlying the financing of a business.  The emphasis is on the uses of capitalization and leverage for current operations and future expansion.

Topical coverage includes:

-        Valuation theory

-        Investment theory

-        Financial planning and control

-        Dividend policy and growth

-        Alternative capitalization structures

-        Appraisal of capital projects

-        Mergers and acquisitions

 

MGT 615                     Financial Accounting                     3 credits

An introduction to the conceptual aspects of Financial Accounting from the manager’s view point.  The emphasis is on the use of financial information in decision-making by exposing students to practical cases.  Topical coverage includes:

-        Recording economic events

-        Basic concepts of accounting

-        Essential accounting standards

-        Interrelationship of financial statement elements

-        Analysis, interpretation and use of internal and external data

 

MGT 618                     Managerial Accounting                      3 credits

This course provides students with the management accounting concepts and techniques.  It deals with different aspects of measuring, summarizing, and communicating accounting information that are used in decision-making.  Emphasis is placed on analyzing practical cases that cover different topics in the field.

 

MGT 624                     Marketing Management                     3 credits

An introduction to the interrelationships of marketing concepts and variables and their impact on policy-making.  The emphasis is on the application of marketing theory to practical problem-solving and strategy formulation.  Topical coverage includes:

-        Marketing systems

-        Integration of marketing policy with operations

-        Research foundations of marketing strategy

-        Coordination of marketing policy with pricing and distribution decisions.

 

MGT 627                     Research Methods in Business     3 credits

An examination of the research methods applicable to the identification, definition and resolutions of problems in a business environment.  The emphasis is on techniques of data collection and analysis.  Topical coverage includes:

-        Problem identification and definition

-        Hypothesis formulation

-        Data collection methodology

-        Statistical validation

-        Research report writing

MGT 636                     Project Planning and Evaluation                     3 credits

An examination of techniques for selecting, supervising and evaluating projects.  The emphasis is on the practical application of the methods of project performance control.

Topical coverage includes:

-        Analysis of needs

-        Alternative courses of action

-        Selection of optimum alternatives

-        Project organization, operation and control

-        Project completion and evaluation

 

MGT 639                     Management Theory                     3 credits

An introduction to the theories and practices of management and organizational behavior and development.  The emphasis is on practical applications in administrative managerial situations.  Topical coverage includes:

-        Goal setting

-        Manpower planning and control

-        Motivation techniques

-        Problem-solving process

 MGT 642                     Business Policy and Strategy     3 credits

A coordinated application of conceptual understanding to policy formulation and implementation.  The emphasis is on the use of managerial skills and theoretical framework in practical situations.  Topical coverage includes:

-        Problem Identification and Definition

-        Organizational goal setting

-        Establishment of structures and systems for goal achievement

-        Performance review and evaluation

 MGT 645                     International Business/Economics            3 credits

An examination of the theory of International trade; comparative advantage and the gains from trade; commercial policies and the analysis of the International monetary system, the exchange rates and the process of adjustments in the balance of payments.  Emphasis is on the decision making process required for the firm’s operation in multiple political, geographical, social, economic and cultural environment. Introduction on world and regional business and financial organizations and their impact on national economic and political stability.

 

MGT 651                     Management Systems      3 credits

An examination of the concepts of management systems in a decision-making environment.  The emphasis is on the integration and control of operating and information systems.  Topical coverage includes:

-        Systems basis in management theory

-        Organizational aspects of management systems

-        Systems-based problem-solving

-        Application of data-based systems concepts to managerial situations

-        Systems design and implementation

 

MGT 654                     Research Topic in Business     3 credits

An examination of the research methods applicable to the identification, definition and resolutions of problems in the present business environment.  The emphasis is on techniques of data collection and analysis.  Topical coverage includes:

-        Problem identification and definition

MGT 657                     Seminar in Management                     3 credits

An examination of issues of current or developing significance and their impact on the availability of top level technique and resources.  Topical coverage will vary, and will be announced shortly before registration for semesters in which the seminar is to be offered.  The seminar may be taken for credit more than once.

 

MGT 698                     Practicum in Management                     6 credits

                     Applied case study in the discipline.

 

MGT 699                     Thesis in Management                     4 credits

Practical application of research methods to a significant topic of current relevance to the spheres of business and business management in the Middle East.  The results of the effort will incorporate the student’s hypothesis, methods of testing, test results and conclusions in a sound, written report available to later researchers.  In certain selected cases, the faculty may authorize expanded research procedures resulting in a high-quality thesis.
